“On my word.” The Admiral spoke without rancor.

“Yes, ma’am.” My hand hovered above the console. The bridge was silent; everyone was waiting for me. This could start the end of everything.

“Go,” she said. I pushed the button.

  1. I really liked that it wasn’t revealed straight away that the Admiral is female. There is an absence of a stereotype based on gender. Well done.

  2. I loved the way you used rancor here, it said so much in one line. I also loved that this was layered with anticipation in the way you kept the lines short and succinct.

  3. It’s often considered that females are against the “end of everything”. Still, you have painted the opposite using a female admiral. Sometimes it’s imperative to get the job done. Good.
